Our colleagues published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

Our colleagues Michal Bauer (CERGE-EI and IES FSV UK) and Julie Chytilová (IES FSV UK and CERGE-EI) together with Jana Cahlíková (Max Planck Institute for Tax Law and Public Finance) and Tomáš Želínský (IES FSV UK Ph.D. Candidate; Economic Faculty, Technical University in Košice) published an article “Social contagion of ethnic hostility” in a prestigious Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) journal.

The article provides experimental evidence on peer effects and shows that behavior that harms members of a different ethnic group is twice as contagious as behavior that harms coethnics. The findings may help to explain why ethnic hostilities can spread quickly (even in societies with few visible signs of interethnic hatred) and why many countries have adopted hate crime laws, and illustrate the need to study not only the existence of discrimination, but also the stability of attitudes and behaviors toward outgroup members.

The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) is one of the most cited journals across all fields of science. It is the official scientific journal of the National Academy of Sciences, published since 1915.
