The Alumni Association supports young talented academics at the IES

06/08/2019

Alumni Chair was awarded for the sixth time. This year, the award went to Paola Bertoli and Jiří Kukačka, two young academics who are active or are beginning to work at the Institute of Economic Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University in Prague (IES). The Alumni Association will distribute 90,000 Czech crowns among Paola and Jiří, which is the amount that Alumni managed to collect last year.

Specifically, Jiří receives financial support of CZK 55,000 and Paola CZK 35,000. Alumni Chair candidates were nominated by the IES and subsequently interviewed by Alumni representatives. “Jiří and Paola are both young and talented colleagues who are now working hard to become experts in their fields. At this stage of their career development, they will certainly appreciate the support from our graduates. I was also pleased that it was possible to support both Economics and Finance department, which is a combination that makes the IES unique and internationally known,” says Martin Gregor, Director of the IES.

Paola joined the IES as the Assistant Professor in June. “I look forward to working at the IES. Especially to working with an exceptional group of students and colleagues,” says Paola. She is currently also an Assistant Professor at University of Economics, Prague (VŠE) and teaches at CERGE-EI. Her work focuses on the Economics of Health, Public Sector Economics and Economic Analysis of Law. She received her doctorate from the University of Bologna and the University of Rotterdam in 2014. Before joining VŠE, she worked as a researcher at the University of Verona or worked as a Senior Economists team at the Italian Antimonopoly Office. At IES she will teach the Applied Econometrics in Health Care course.

Jiří Kukačka is also an Assistant Professor at the IES. At the same time, he is a researcher at the Department of Econometrics, ÚTIA AV ČR. He also represents the IES in the Academic Senate of the Faculty of Social Sciences of Charles University. He is a lecturer in Econometrics in the MA program and is now involved in teaching a new course in Behavioral Economics and Finance. This year, together with his colleagues Ladislav Krištoufek and Michal Červinka, Jiří is the principal researcher of the PRIMUS university project entitled “Behavioral Finance and Macroeconomics: New Perspectives for the Mainstream”. In his free time he enjoys outdoor activities of all kinds and traveling. However, he is currently spending the most of his free time with his six-month-old daughter Adela. "When I co-organized the first-ever E-go with the E-Club, I didn't even dream that one day I would teach my own course at the IES and receive the Alumni Award," adds Jiří.

Alumni have been organizing the Alumni Chair grant program since 2008, which followed the previous Program of Support for Publications. That has been awarded since 2001. Alumni Chair is a grant aimed at top young researchers working at the Institute of Economic Studies, Charles University. The intention is to support early academics who work as both teachers and researchers at the IES. In the past, Alumni Chair was received by Ladislav Krištoufek, Jaromír Baxa, Barbara Pertold-Gebická, Julie Chytilová or Michal Červinka. The amount of financial support every year depends on donations from IES graduates.

We thank all graduates for their donations!
