IES students’ project won third place and support in the innovation hackaton #NakopniPrahu
Within the Prague innovation marathon #NakopniPrahu (StartUpPrague), organized by the Municipality of the capital city Prague, 44 registered teams had six months to develop and prepare a pitch of a project, focused on improving the lives of the inhabitants of Prague in several specific areas. Of the eight teams that made it to the finals, the third place was won by three students from IES FSV UK: Marta Batíková, Petr Pham and Jakub Stuchlík, who convinced the jury about the positive impact of their project Knihy na Prahu - Books on the threshold (of Prague). They say that the initial impulse for them to enter the competition came from the Innovation Laboratory, a course that all of them attended in the summer semester at Faculty of Arts.
The main goal of the project is to enable easier and broader access to books and modern technologies to the seniors of Prague.
The target group is used to borrowing books from the library, but often lack quality internet connection, know-how or self-confidence when it comes to borrowing an e-reader, search within the e-catalogue or make a reservation online. In cooperation with the Municipal Library of Prague, the authors of the project will set up a tailor-made service of assisted book-lending and teach the employees of the library how to help the seniors overcome technical, financial and health barriers with a personal approach. The project follows up on MLP’s long term trend of digitizing their books, meaning the seniors can alredy gain access to more than 2000 titles through the e-readers. In the ideal case, more than 3300 seniors will be fully trained to use the e-readers within the project.
The importance of the project and the ways it can improve the life of the seniors should they be denied the standard ways of accessing books, became even more clear when the covid-19 pandemic stroke in the middle of the project development.
The jury therefore also appreciated the flexibility with which the team reacted to the new situation and innovated their original proposal.
The recording of the final evening is available here (Czech language only).
