New course JEM159 International Commercial Dispute Resolution was set up for summer semester 2014 under supervision of Tomáš Hülle and group of very senior lawyers and economists from biggest consultancy firms in the Czech republic. Lecturers of this course participated on historically largest legal disputes in the Czech republic and will share their know how and experience on a regular basis with students of IES FSV UK. Students will gain practical knowledge of business negotiations and eventual dispute resolution if negotiation fails.

Law and Economics: First Student Workshop

Czecho-Slovak Law and Economics Association (CSLEA) invites Master and PhD students to submit papers to its first student workshop on Law and Economics. The workshop is held on April 4, 2014, at Charles University Law School. The purpose of the worskhop is to bring students who write theses on Law and Economics together and provide them with feedback from senior mentors. Keynote speakers are Zdenek Kuhn and Libor Dusek. Policy Research for Ministry of Finance of the Slovak Republic

The Ministry of Finance of the Slovak Republic (MoF), Office of the Minister, is launching a call for proposals for cooperation in the field of policy-related research. The call is intended for university master (final year) or doctoral students of economics, political science or other related discipline. Proposers are invited to locate their topic according to topics in pdf. Proposals should shortly define research areas, selected approach, estimated time plan and potential relevance for MoF. Successful candidates will closely cooperate with MoF advisors and will be able to benefit from having access to data and consultancy.

For the third consecutive year the Institute of Economic Studies took over the ranking of the best economics schools that Hospodářské noviny, a major Czech daily, draws up every year.

The newspaper greatly values international environment of our school when almost every IES student has a chance to spend a semester abroad and we are also sought among foreign students interested in studying in the Czech Republic. Moreover, the vast majority of our thesis is written in English. We also excel in quality of our lecturers and research.

The newspaper also points out that we stay in touch with our alumni and ask them for their feedback. It has turned out that our graduates have the highest income on the Czech labour market (49 297 CZK brutto/month).

The IES Open Day attracted hundreds of students

The Institue of Economic Studies invited all those who are interested in studying at the IES to the Open Doors Day that took place in its premises in the center of Prague on January 17.

Martin Gregor, IES director, mentioned in his presentation all important information on the studies, drew attention to the news and named all opportunities that are waiting for students. Representatives of E-club, the student organization, presented all events they organize for the freshmen and shared important advice on how to deal with first challenging semesters. 

Details of the application process was covered by a representative of Scio. Official presentations then led up to informal discussions. 

Throughout the day the IES building in the Opletalova street 26, Prague 1, was open for all visitors who could see lecture rooms, library and computer labs.

CFA Awareness Scholarships

We are awarding three (3) CFA Program Awareness Scholarships to best students interested in taking CFA Program exams. Awareness Scholarships are designated for key influencers in the academic and financial communities, including students affiliated with our Recognized Universities. The scholarships substantially reduce the CFA Program enrollment and exam registration fee.

Dear students, please note that the topic of your thesis must be confirmed by your supervisor in the Student Information System one year before the defense. If you want to defend your thesis at the end of the Winter Semester 2014/2015, the deadline is February 14, 2014. Send the proposal (following the template available on the website of JEM124) to all teachers of the master thesis seminar by February 14, 2014. You can choose from a list of offered topics or come up with your own topic and try to contact a suitable advisor. I highly recommend you choose a narrowly defined empirical topic. Use the SIS module "Thesis (Selection of subject)" to assign to your topic. If your topic is not in the list, ask your supervisor to publish it. Please read carefully the information available on the seminar website.

Introduction to Auctions: a mini-course

Jakub Kastl, Assistant Professor at Stanford University and our alumnus, is giving a crash mini-course on auctions at the IES. The 2-day course is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday (16-17 December; exact schedule to be announced). 

The course on auction markets will examine how auction theory performs on the real markets including eBay, Treasury Auctions, Liquidity and Electricity Auctions and Sponsored Ad Auctions. The course is a unique opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge about auctions from a top expert in the field.

The course starts on Monday 12:30-15:30 in Room 016 (computer lab). The next sessions are on Tuesday 9:30-12:30 in Room 105 (may be subject to change).

Lecture "Structural Gravity Model with Dummies Only"

by Prof. Peter Egger from ETH Zürich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) will be held Monday 16 December, hall 105 at 16:00, IES. Prof. Egger will present his recent research on the construction of econometric models based on panel data (a topic where Prof. Egger is one of the world’s leading authorities). Although the specification of dummies (e.g. for countries, enterprises, agents, time and policies) is a topic of crucial importance, standard econometric techniques lead often to incorrect estimations and misleading inferences. An alternative approach to the problem where fixed effects estimators could still retain properties of a structural model will be discussed.

Petr Janský contributed to new results of the Commitment to Development Index

New results of the Commitment to Development Index (CDI), recently reported by Guardian and other international as well as Czech media, show which countries have most development friendly policies. The Czech Republic ranks 24th out of 27 rich countries and has a huge potential for improvement in helping poor countries. 

Petr Janský (IES) has contributed to the CDI project of the Center for Global Development (a US think tank) by successfully proposing to include a measure of illicit financial flows in the CDI and hence contributed to a now renamed Finance component of the CDI.

The Economist published results of the Financial Secrecy Index with participation of Petr Jansky

New results of the Financial Secrecy Index (FSI), recently reported by The Economist, show that not only little island states (tax havens included), but also some big economies are the biggest contributors to the financial secrecy. Petr Jansky (IES) has been contributing to the FSI project of the Tax Justice Network since 2009 and focuses on the quantitative part of the FSI (exports of financial services).

An academic article on the FSI was presented at a conference in Oxford and is currently under review by a top journal.
