In July 2014, the 2nd annual Prague Summer School on International Business Transactions has been taking place in Prague focussing on the most important legal fields of today, including dispute resolution, insolvency or mergers and acquisitions. The participants come mainly from China, but from the other countries as Australia too. The Director of Prague Summer Program is Tomáš Hülle, external lecturer of IES in field Dispute Resolution, Information Technology Law, Intellectual Property Law, Contract Law.
The Prague Summer School is held under the auspices of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic and the Institute of Economic Studies FSS CU.

We welcome professor Evzen Kocenda as the new co-editor of the Czech Journal of Economics and Finance. Evzen has published more than 60 articles in refereed journals including the highly selective journals such as Journal of Economic Literature, Econometric Reviews, Journal of Banking and Finance, Journal of Comparative Economics or Journal of Financial Stability. His research is widely cited with more than 550 citations in Scopus and H-index of 14. The RePEc rankings currently ranks Evzen as the no. 1 (out of 333 economists registered) academic economist living in the Czech Republic. Evzen is affiliated with CERGE-EI and will join our team of co-editors as of September, 1.

A paper by our faculty member Petr Teplý titled “The Navigator of Responsible Lending - An Alternative Model in Consumer Finance” was awarded as the best paper at The 1st International Conference on Social Science and Humanity (ICSSH) that took place in Tbilisi (Georgia) in August 2014. The paper summarized key results of a 3-year research project "The Navigator of Responsible Lending" supervised by prof. Michal Mejstřík. Moreover, Petr Teplý was selected as the key note speaker of this conference. Congratulations!

He has finished his Bachelors studies at IES two years ago and now he finishes his Masters in Amsterdam where he was in the top three groups winning the Econometric Game competition this Spring. The Scientific Committee of UniCredit & Universities Foundation selected the three outstanding doctoral dissertations in Economics or Finance.
The winners of the 4th Best PhD Thesis Award are Silvia Galli (Lecturer in Economics at University of Hull, Durham, U.K.), Tomáš Havránek (Assistant Professor at IES FSV UK), and Gerardo Manzo (Fama-Miller Research Professional at University of Chicago Booth School of Business).
The competition was open to all young PhD graduates in the fields of Economic or Finance from European countries forming part of the geographical scope of Unicredit Group. The dissertation of Tomáš Havránek "Meta-Analysis in International Economics" has succeeded in a very strong competition. Congratulations!

Award for best CNB research papers

The Czech National Bank has granted this year’s Economic Research Award to two articles. The announcement of the Award formed part of the Czech National Bank’s 10th Research Open Day.
The first article, entitled “Transmission Lags of Monetary Policy: A Meta-Analysis”, was written by Tomáš Havránek and Marek Rusnák.
The second, entitled “Are Bayesian Fan Charts Useful for Central Banks? Uncertainty, Forecasting, and Financial Stability Stress Tests”, was written by Michal Franta, Jozef Baruník, Roman Horváth and Kateřina Šmídková. Kateřina Šmídková had originally given up the award, but the CNB decided to bestow it on her in memoriam.
The two research papers that share this year’s Economic Research Award are both highly relevant to the CNB and were published in the prestigious and highly selective International Journal of Central Banking.

If you want to defend your thesis next year in the summer semester, your topic must be confirmed by your supervisor in the Student Information System by June 20, 2014 (use the "Thesis" module).
Then by July 31, 2014, you must send the detailed thesis proposal, conforming to the template and approved by your supervisor, to email@example.com , firstname.lastname@example.org, and email@example.com. Note that this version of the proposal should not be signed; you and your supervisor will only sign the final version later on.
You can choose from a list of topics in the SIS or come up with your own topic. In any case, you must find a suitable advisor willing to work with you.
