Holler (University of Hamburg and Public Choice Research Centre at the university of Turku) will have a guest lecture on “Value versus Utility” on Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at 8 am in room 314, as a part of an introductory course, Principles of Economics I. New course Quantitative Methods I

All Master and PhD students are invited to enroll into the new course Quantitative Methods I. Its goal is to give an introduction to advanced quantitative methods in social sciences. The emphasis will be put on application of econometric methods, such as measurement of economic policies, Bayesian econometrics, high-frequency finance, robust econometrics, meta-analysis, time series econometrics or experimental econometrics. All students who want to attend this course should register in SIS.

Czech Certified Financial Analysts (CFA) Society organizes an international company valuation case competition. Teams of 3-5 students are assigned a mentor, CFA charter-holder, with an extensive business experience. Winners proceed to the European and ultimately global round. Learn more about the competition at the presentation on Wednesday 10 October 2012 at 19:30 at the University of Economics (VSE). Applications of individual students accompanied with a CV, a brief motivation letter and a transcript of records from SIS in pdf (printscreen) to Jiri Novak (novakji@fsv.cuni.cz) by 12 October 2010, 12:00. Applicants should be aware that a successful participation is time consuming. In the motivation letter applicants should specify their time constraints and how much time they are ready to invest in the competition. Learn about financial markets and securities, how to rank investment alternatives, use different interest rates, immunize a bond portfolio, measure financial risk, and structure a stock portfolio optimally. Subject to satisfactory performance and course completion, you will receive a statement of accomplishment signed by the instructor. This statement will not stand in the place of a course taken at Stanford or an accredited institution.

The visiting lecturer is Maria Bigoni from the University of Bologna. The workshop with take place from Nov 15th to Nov 19th 2012 at LEE premises. 2012 Competition of the Czech Econometrics Society

The Czech Econometrics Society has announced results of the 2012 competition of the Best Paper in Economic Theory and Econometrics. Three out of five awarded students come from the IES. Radovan Parrák scored 3rd place with paper The economic valuation of variance forecasts: an artificial option market approach. Two special prizes go to Pavel Dvořák for his paper Ising model in finance: New features and Hana Hejlová for her paper Efficiency of regulation on Spanish housing market. Congratulations!
