CFA Research Challenge 2014

The Chartered Financial Analysts Institute (CFA) organizes an international student competition in company valuation. Teams of 3-5 students are assigned a mentor, CFA charter-holder, with an extensive business experience. Winners proceed to the European and global round. Learn more about the competition at the presentation on Wednesday, 2 October 2013, at 19:45 at the University of Economics (VSE) RB 212 . Applications of individual students accompanied with a CV, a brief motivation letter and a transcript of records from SIS in pdf (printscreen) to Jiri Novak (novakji@fsv.cuni.cz) by 22 October 2010, 23:59. Applicants should be aware that a successful participation is time consuming. In the motivation letter applicants should specify their time constraints and how much time they are ready to invest in the competition. Selection of team members will be based on the competence, motivation and commitment of the individual applicants.

CFA Institute University Recognition Program

Two of our programs, Bachelor Program in Economics and Finance (Czech) and Master Programs in Economics and Finance (Czech), have been accepted into the CFA Institute University Recognition Program. This status is granted to institutions whose degree programs incorporate at least 70% of the CFA Program Candidate Body of Knowledge (CBOK), which provide students with a solid grounding in the CBOK and positions them well to sit for the CFA Exams.

CFA charter is the most respected and recognized financial degree in the world. Earning the CFA charter demonstrates the skills needed for investment analysis and decision making in today’s global financial industry.

ETPM: Economic Theory, Policy and Measurement

I would like to invite all PhD students to a re-labeled ETPM seminar, entitled Economic Theory, Policy and Measurement. The primary aim of the seminar is to provide valuable feedback to dissertation research of the participants. Topics with explicit policy consequences are preferred, but any paper in economics qualifies for the presentation. Both theory and empirics is welcome. You may expect constructive, productive and relevant feedback to your work. The seminar will be led by Martin Gregor (theory, policy) and Barbara Pertold-Gebicka (empirics). Experts from the IES are co-authors of the book on economies in transition

Vladimír Benáček and Zdeněk Drábek stand behind “Handbook of the Economics and Political Economy of Transition” (Routledge publishing) covering large-scale institutional change and reforms at all levels that took place in post-communist countries.

This new handbook assembles a team of leading experts, many of whom were closely involved in the transition process as policymakers and policy advisors, to explore the major themes that have characterized the transition process.

Vladimir Benacek and Zdenek Drabek are authors of the 13th chapter where they analyze trade reorientation and global integration.

Learn basic Chinese through English

This academic year, within the Lifelong Education Programme, the FSV UK  is opening another Chinese language course . It will be taught by Mr. Li Linping from the Confucius Institute of Palacky University in Olomouc. The classes will take place in room 601 of the Opletalova FSV building, on Fridays from 9:30 to 12:20 (lower-intermediate students from last academic year) and 12:30 to 15:20 (new beginners). The course is intended to last four terms. Please see this academic year's  syllabi on the SIS, codes JLB049 and JLB051.
FSV students enrolled in programmes offered in foreign languages who cover their own tuition are exempt from the course  payment in accordance with the Regulations of Lifelong Education of Charles University. The tuition for other participants amounts to 5,200CZK per 2 semesters.  Registration has to be confirmed  and participants notified via email by the course coordinator. Payments have to be transferred onto the FSV by October 4th. Please print the name of the course participant in the “zpráva pro příjemce“ / 'indication note for the recipient' field, and bring the document certifying the payment to the teacher in the first session.
FSV students  can apply through the SIS. Faculty and staff can apply via email at mistrova@fsv.cuni.cz.

Invitation to the 2013 IES Economic Meeting

Please accept our invitation to the 2nd  IES Economic Meeting that will take place at the Institute of Economic Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic on 26 September 2013. This one-day workshop will focus on a broad topic of modelling in macroeconomics and finance. Any theoretical or empirical paper, especially those dealing with Central and Eastern Europe, falling in this broadly defined area is welcomed.

Selected papers will be published in a special issue of Czech Journal of Economics and Finance under the guest-editorship of Jozef Barunik (Charles University) and Roman Horvath (Charles University).

There is no conference fee, but participants are expected to cover their expenses.

Research by Ladislav Kristoufek accepted for publication in one of top multidisciplinary journals

Research paper by Ladislav Kristoufek has been recently accepted for publication in Scientific Reports, a multidisciplinary journal published by prestigeous Nature Publishing Group, ranked among top multidisciplinary sciences journals. In the paper "Can Google Trends search queries contribute to portfolio diversification?", search frequency of ticker terms of the DJI stocks is utilized for discrimination of popular stocks, which decreases risk and increases Sharpe ratio of a portfolio. The paper contributes to the current stream of research on the added value of Google searches to the standard economic and financial topics as well as on investing into peripheral stocks. Congratulations!

A paper by members of our faculty Jana Gutierréz Chvalkovská  and Petr Teplý titled “A literature review of regulatory impact assessment (RIA): theoretical background and implementation” was awarded as the best paper at a conference organized by The World Academy of Researchers, Educators, and Scholars (WARES) in Business, Social Sciences, Humanities and Education that took place in Cape Town (South Africa) in July 2013. Moreover, Petr Teplý was selected as the key note speaker of this conference. Congratulations!

Roman Horvath becomes a co-editor of Economics E-Journal of the Kiel Institute of the World Economy

Summer school for Chinese students under auspices of the IES

The IES and the Ministry of Industry and Trade became patrons of Prague Summer School on International Business Transactions whose aim is to educate elite Chinese students in the field of international business.

This year’s Prague Summer School which took place in July was attended by 17 Chinese students who pursued their career in international trade, diplomacy and law. The lecturers who recruited from top-tier law firms and academic institutions provided a first-hand experience with the environment of cross-border transactions.

 

Next to the IES and the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Prague Summer School was supported by a number of Chinese and Czech law firms, academic institutions and international corporations.

IES co-founded the Center for Healthcare Economics and Management

The Center for Healthcare Economics and Management was founded in cooperation with the Third Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, the Institute of Economic Studies and the Advance Healthcare Management Institute.

The opening ceremony took place on 28 May with participation of Leos Heger, the Minister of Health of the Czech Republic, Michael Andel, the Dean of the Third Faculty of Medicine, and Martin Gregor, the IES Director. 

The aim of the Center is to contribute to the interdisciplinary cooperation in the field of economics and healthcare management. The Center is also active in the field of academic and lifelong education and research. It welcomes cooperation with other institutions and individuals interested in research and education in the field of economics and healthcare management .

IES hosted Open Doors Day

The Institue of Economic Studies invited all accepted students as well as those who are interested in the IES to the Open Doors Day that took place in its premises in the center of Prague on 7 June. Martin Gregor, IES director, mentioned in his presentation all important information on the studies, drew attention to the news and named all opportunities that are waiting for students. Representatives of E-club, the student organization, presented all events they have prepared for the freshmen and shared important advice on how to deal with first challenging semesters. Official presentations then led up to informal discussions. 

Throughout the day the IES building in the Opletalova street 26, Prague 1, was open for all visitors who could see lecture rooms, library and computer labs.

Research by our faculty members accepted for publication in Psychological Science

New research by our faculty members Michal Bauer and Julie Chytilova was recently accepted for publication in Psychological Science. Psychological Science is one of leading scientific journals in psychology. Michal and Julie show, together with their co-authors from University of San Francisco and University of British Columbia, how war influences social preferences. They find that war experience increases egalitarian preferences among those that belong to some group or coalition. Congratulations!
