| Description: | OVERVIEW This course covers major aspects of the economic policy-making in the European Union. The course will explore the economic theories behing common economic policies, political economy aspects of the European policy-making, monetary, fiscal, financial stability and agricultural policies. The attention will be paid to both individual policies as well as their institutional set-ups. The impact of the current events such as consequences of enlargement and financial crisis will be explored. LEVEL This is an advanced course. 1. Knowledge corresponding to the content of the course "European Economic Integration" is required. 2. Basic knowledge of the IS-LM like models, reference textbook trade models, simple game theory models, and models with loss functions is assumed. 3. The ability to work with a reading list consisting of various sources (reference textbook, reference websites, extensive slides and reading list) is important since there is no single textbook available to cover all issues at this advanced level. |

| Seminar: | SEMINARS: Students will give presentations of selected papers. The papers that are to be presented are on the course web (see seminarpapers.doc). Each seminar will consist of presentations of one or two papers. Each presentation should last for 20-25 minutes. For each presentation there will be one discussant, that will prepare 5-10 min presentation to discuss the presentation of her/his colleges. There will be enough time for questions and discussion. Everybody has to choose a paper to present and send one email to eepcourse (at) gmail.com with subject PRESENTATION. Content of the email: preferred paper, name of the second member of your group (1 student could be only in 1 group) I.e. if there is 62 students taking this course, exactly 62 emails should be received and your name will be there twice. Once as in your email and second time as a member of the group of your college (received emails will also serve as comunication tool during the semester). The strictly recommended date of your paper assignment is Monday 27. February 14.00 at eepcourse (at) gmail.com. Please note that random paper could be allocated to you in the Lottery in case of not reveiling your preferences 2nd seminar LOTERY (February 28) for all papers. Presenting group will be drawn and Discussant will be drawn. Please print it and bring it to the lecture. Send it also in electronic form at eepcourse (at) gmail.com, with a subject YOURNAME EEP essay, e.g. "Jones EEP essay". If the printed version is not submitted in time (even if file is sent to email), your essay will not be considered submitted. Guidelines for writing essays can be found in the attached file. On February 28, during seminar a short lecture on how to write a good essay will be provided. Three examples of very good essays from previous years are also attached on this course website. |
| Course requirements: | REQUIREMENTS: Written exam, essay (2,000 words), and oral or written presentation of a paper (conspectus) - all in English. GRADING: up to 40 points for essay, up to 40 points for exam (with minimum requirement), up to 20 points for seminar oral presentation (or conspectus). To obtain grade 1/2/3, students have to collect at least 80/70/60 points. This means that student needs to obtain at least 60 points to get a pass grade. In the case of essays and conspecta, for every week after the deadline, final grade will be discounted by 25 per cent. Remember, printed version counts. |
