Abstract: This paper deals with the issue of free trade areas from both theoretical and practical points of view. The first part starts with the theoretical definition of basic integration stages. Later, it focuses on practical problems connected with existing free trade areas, such as the question of rules of origin and its cumulation problems. We introduce an example of the development of a real free trade area – The Central European Free Trade Area.
In the next part, we use an analytical tool – the gravity model – to demonstrate the actual influence of the membership in basic integration groups. Later on, we compare trade potentials with the actual trade in Europe. At the end of the paper, we state directions of possible future research.
