Abstract: Mergers and acquisitions as well as other capital transactions are very important not only from the economic point of view but also from the perspective of transfer of control in the globalizing world economy. Due to the collapse of some of the regulatory and geographical barriers, growing economic performance, global banking services and high level of free private equity, we experienced a rise in volume and value of M&A transactions all over the world.
M&A activity has also grown significantly in the Czech Republic and is reflecting the trends of the Western Europe and USA, especially with respect to increase in volume and value of transactions carried out by of private equity funds.
The aim of this thesis is to analyze the development of M&A activity in the Czech Republic, outline the main factors which influence the M&A activity and provide comparison with other European countries. The thesis describes the main trends in the M&A activity in the Czech Republic since 1990. Individual chapters analyze the course and results of the coupon privatization, other privatization methods and M&A activity after 1998 in the Czech Republic. Special focus is put on private equity funds and the significant growth in their activities since 2000. The thesis analyzes the overall context and factors which encourage the activity of private equity funds in the Czech Republic and on the world markets.
