Centre for Public Finance: first year achievements and priorities ahead

The Centre for Public Finance, based at the Institute of Economic Studies is an independent team of economists dedicated to improving Czech public finance through evidence-based research and practical policy solutions. Its mission is to promote performance budgeting, efficient public revenues and strategic public spending while strengthening informed public debate and supporting evidence-based policymaking.

In the first full year of its operation, the Centre made a tangible contribution to public finance reform in Czechia. Key achievements included contributions to the first pilot elements of performance budgeting in the Czech state budget, the development of Smarter Taxes together with PAQ Research and IDEA at CERGE-EI, and research contributing to improvements in the tax treatment of corporate R&D.

In 2025, the Centre published 12 studies and policy papers, contributed to 8 public and expert debates, and established 9 strategic partnerships. Its members participated in more than 350 expert conferences and events. The Centre also had more than 1,500 media appearances, significantly contributing to public discussion on economic policy. 

The Centre combines academic excellence with practical policy engagement. Throughout 2025, it worked with the Ministry of Finance, the National Fiscal Council, Czech and international research institutions, and policymakers. The Centre also invested in mentoring students and young researchers, helping develop the next generation of public finance experts.

In 2026, the Centre continues advancing its proposals for tax reform and performance budgeting while expanding its work on defense spending, pensions, demographic aging and long-term fiscal sustainability.
