Abstract: The Central European countries have inherited from their past socialist masters not only almost bankrupt industries and devastated infrastructure, but, in addition, they have to cope with inflated social security systems which were created to guarantee social peace within socialist societies and which have proved unsuitable for market economies. As this article is concerned exclusively with pension systems we will focus on them, but it needs to be remembered that pension systems create only a part, albeit very important, of the whole social security system.
