Abstract: The main purpose of this thesis is to contribute to the explanation of French monetary history through analysis of the period of bimetallism and the transmission to the gold standard until the fall of Gold Franc in the year 1936. We focused on the definition of time periods in which the French currency was prosperous and stable.
In the first chapter the main events of French monetary history are described, the second part deals with the Latin monetary union which underpinned bimetallic standard so it could remain for longer time.
In the next chapters we concentrate in more detail on the 20th century. Firstly, we describe how the Second Word War influenced French economics and monetary development, then we pointed out the achievements of Raymond Poincaré who brought France in the 20th years of 20th century through the economic and monetary crisis and who introduced so called "Franc Poincaré". Finally the economic depression in 30th years of 20th century is depicted, which resulted in the collapse of the Gold Franc in the year 1936.
