|Abstract:||The main mission of this paper is to provide a comprehensive view on issues concerning life insurance. Life insurance itself is examined and introduced in several levels. In the first part of the paper there is a basic characteristics of life insurance products. With that the basic principles of life insurance mathematics are given.
The second part of the paper analyses life insurance industry. The performance of the Czech life insurance market is compared with other European markets. The most important part of the paper is devoted to the role which the industry of life insurance plays in the social security systems. Five examples are presented here, e.g. the social security systems of the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Italy, Germany and France. The situation in the Czech Republic is described in detail at the end of this section.
The final part of the paper deals with the investment policy and strategy of life insurance companies. These institutions have huge amounts of assets, whose sources are mainly technical provisions a insurance funds.
