Abstract: This thesis covers the problematic of the transformation process and the process of fiscal consolidation on one hand generally, on the other hand specifically in the Czech Republic and in the Slovak Republic. At the beginning the thesis briefly summarises the fundamental principles on which the socialist system of the centrally planned economy was built and its implications on further development in both countries. Consequently, the thesis points out the weak points of the transformation process and its incidents on current situation. The centre of the work is the analysis of the current situation in both countries as well as the analysis of proposed or already implemented reforms of the tax and pension systems. Thesis deals with the main principles of these reforms, their consequences on future economic development of the Czech and the Slovak Republic and their justification under current conditions. Thesis does not forget the fundamental fact, which the integration to the European Union is and their direct as well as indirect influences on one hand on the transformation process and on the other hand on the current fiscal consolidation.
