Abstract: The diploma thesis deals with Turkish enlargement from three basic aspects. Firstly, Turkish enlargement is deeply compared to the last enlargement of the ten new member states which took place in May 2004. Main differences which are likely to have large consequences for both Turkey and the European Union are described in this part of the paper.
Political aspects of the Turkish enlargement are the second viewpoint of the thesis. These are mainly Copenhagen political criteria and the most important political fields, which might eventually complicate Turkish membership in the European Union.
Last aspect of the Turkish enlargement question is economic development and Copenhagen economic criteria. First part of this particular chapter briefly describes economic development of the Turkish economy during the last decade and main economic problems are mentioned as well. Customs union of Turkey and the European Union is deeply analysed in the subsequent part, mainly because of its importance to the current state of relationship between Turkey and EU. Last part of this chapter deals with regional disparities within Turkey and potential consequences for the European regional policy.
The aim of this thesis is to assess preparedness of Turkey to enter the European Union and to identify the most critical aspects of negotiation talks.
