Credit transfer during your studies

Credit transfer during your studies

Decisions about credit transfers are made on a case-by-case basis, after careful evaluation, by the Director of Undergraduate Studies. This guide explains the procedure in detail.

ELIGIBILITY

A student must be admitted and registered to the program to be allowed to submit a request. Courses will not be evaluated for possible credit transfer before a student is admitted to the program.

Courses from educational institutions other than IES (except of credits gained at an Erasmus study stay or another form of study stay abroad – see more information below)

A course can be considered for a credit transfer if the following conditions are met:

  • The course was completed at an accredited institution.
  • A corresponding course is offered at IES.
  • It was completed with grade 1 or 2 (A, B, or C in the ETCS grading scale). Credit will be awarded for grade 3 (D or E in the ETCS grading scale) only in exceptional cases (e.g., for courses from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University).
  • It was completed no longer than five years prior to the date of request.
  • Credit can be awarded for courses for which the corresponding course offered at IES is a mandatory (povinný) or an elective (povinně volitelný) course in the study plan for the current academic year (Karolinka).
  • Credit transfer is approved by the Lecturer of the corresponding course at IES.
  • If there is no corresponding course offered at IES, the credit can be transferred towards optional (volitelný) courses (in such a case, the Lecturer's approval is not necessary and the Director of Undergraduate Studies decides about the number of credits transferred).

The number of credits transferred is equal to the number of credits for the corresponding course offered at IES, not to the number of credits received for the course at another institution.

Courses from previous studies at IES

In general, it is possible to receive credit for courses passed at IES in the past if the following conditions are met:

  • The course was completed no longer than five years prior to the date of request.
  • It is offered as a mandatory (povinný) or an elective (povinně volitelný) course in the study plan for the current academic year and for the program a student is currently studying in (Karolinka).
  • If the course is not offered as a mandatory or an elective course, it is still possible to receive credit for it which counts towards optional (volitelný) courses.
  • Credit transfer is possible only for courses which were successfully passed at the first attempt, i.e. they were not preceded by an unsuccessful attempt which resulted in grade F.
  • Credit transfer for a course from the Master’s program completed during the Bachelor’s program is possible only if such course was passed beyond the requirements for completing the Bachelor’s program (i.e. 180 credits).

Courses from IES Master’s program

Credit for courses from the Master’s program passed during the undergraduate studies counts towards optional (volitelný) courses.

If a student does not use these credits towards the 180 credits required for the undergraduate program and is admitted to the Master’s program, it is possible to apply for credit transfer for these courses in the Master’s program. A formal request can be submitted after the student is admitted to the Master’s program. The decision about credit transfer is made by the Director of Master Studies.

Advanced Placement (AP) exams

In addition, credit for the courses listed below can be awarded to students who have earned scores of 4 or 5 on the Advanced Placement (AP) examinations. No credit will be awarded for tests taken after a student is admitted to IES.

  • Credit for the course Principles of Economics I (JEB101) or Ekonomie I (JEB003) can be awarded for scores 4 or 5 on the AP Microeconomics exam.
  • Credit for the course Principles of Economics II (JEB102) or Ekonomie II (JEB004) can be awarded for scores 4 or 5 on the AP Macroeconomics exam.
  • Credit for the course Seminář z matematické analýzy I (JEB058) can be awarded for scores 4 or 5 on the AP Calculus AB exam.
  • Credit for the courses Seminář z matematické analýzy I (JEB058) and Seminář z matematické analýzy a algebry II (JEB059) can be awarded for scores 4 or 5 on the AP Calculus BC exam.

International Baccalaureate (IB) exams

Credit for the courses listed below can be awarded to students who have earned scores of 6 or 7 on the International Baccalaureate (IB) examinations. No credit will be awarded for tests taken after a student is admitted to IES.

  • Credit for the courses Principles of Economics I (JEB101) and Principles of Economics II (JEB102), or Ekonomie I (JEB003) and Ekonomie II (JEB004) can be awarded for scores 6 or 7 on the IB Economics Higher level exam.
  • Credit for the courses Seminář z matematické analýzy I (JEB058) and Seminář z matematické analýzy a algebry II (JEB059) can be awarded for scores 6 or 7 on the IB Mathematics: Analysis and approaches Higher level exam or for score 7 on the IB Mathematics: Analysis and approaches Standard level exam.

TRANSFER CREDIT PROCEDURE

A registered student who wishes to receive credit must submit formal request for credit transfer. The request consists of three parts:

  • The Transfer of Credit form (in Czech, Protokol o splnění studijních povinností v dřívějším studiu) which is available at the website of the Faculty of Social Sciences, points 7 and 8 here and here.
  • A complete syllabus of the course that demonstrates that the course fulfills the required criteria.
  • An original official document based on which the credit would be transferred (e.g., transcript of grades).

If the documents are in a language other than Czech, Slovak or English, a translation done by a licensed translator must be provided.

Partial or incomplete requests will not be considered for review.

The form has to be signed by the Lecturer of the corresponding course offered at IES and by the Director of Undergraduate Studies (except of the case when credit is transferred towards optional courses, where only the signature of the Director of Undergraduate Studies is needed). Students need to obtain the Lecturer’s signature of approval. Then the request should be submitted as a pdf document via email to the Director of Undergraduate Studies, who will evaluate it and will deliver the request to the Student Services Department.

Requests delivered to the Student Services Department by the students themselves (even if they include approvals of the Lecturer and the Director of Undergraduate Studies) will not be considered for review.

COURSES FROM ERASMUS STUDY STAYS AND OTHER STUDY STAYS ABROAD

In general, the following rules apply:

  • Credit for the course passed abroad can be transferred towards a corresponding mandatory (povinný) or elective (povinně volitelný) course offered at IES if there is enough overlap between the two courses. The number of credits transferred is equal to the number of credits for the corresponding course offered at IES, not to the number of credits received for the course abroad.
  • Credit for courses in the field of economics passed abroad can be transferred with their original name (without an equivalent) towards elective courses. The number of credits received is equal to the number of credits received abroad.
  • Credit for other courses (other fields, languages, sports) can be transferred toward optional (volitelný) courses. The number of credits received is equal to the number of credits received abroad.
  • The decision about the final grade is made by the Director of Undergraduate Studies based on the transcript of records and grading system of the university abroad. If the university gives grades on a different scale than A-F, the student will provide a conversion table as an attachment to the request.

The procedure for Erasmus study stays and other study stays abroad is the following.

 Before departure:

  • Before departing for the study stay, a student gets access to an online system in which she/he submits a proposed study program abroad (Table A) and the list of components in the student’s degree which will be replaced by the study abroad (Table B).
  • If the student wants to transfer credit towards an equivalent course at IES, Table B includes the code and title of the course at IES and the number of credits of the course at IES.
  • If the student wants to transfer credit without an equivalent course at IES, Table B includes “Zahraniční výjezd” as the title of the course and the number of credits abroad.
  • The document needs to be submitted as a pdf document via email to the Director of Undergraduate Studies who either approves it and sends it to the International Office or requests changes to be made.

During study stay abroad:

  • During the study stay abroad, if there are any changes in the original learning agreement, the student revises the learning agreement (Table C and D).
  • The document needs to be submitted as a pdf document via email to the Director of Undergraduate Studies who either approves it and sends it to the International Office or requests changes to be made.

After arrival:

  • After arrival from the study stay abroad, a student fills the Transfer Credit form (Protokol o splnění studijních povinností v zahraničí). A transcript of records must be attached to the form. Both an English and a Czech version of the form are available here (point number 10): https://fsv.cuni.cz/studium/formulare-navody/formulare-bc-mgr. The learning agreement should be also attached to the form (Tables A and B; C and D if there were any revisions) and, if necessary, attach also a table with grade conversion to ECTS scale A-F.
  • If the credit is transferred towards a corresponding course offered at IES, it is necessary to record in the part “Equivalent course at FSS CU” the type of the course (compulsory/elective/optional) plus the code of the IES course. In this case, the number of credits is equal to the number of credits of the IES course. If it is transferred towards an elective or optional course without a specific equivalent, the form needs to contain only the type of course (elective/optional).
  • The protocol with student’s signature needs to be submitted as a pdf document via email to the Director of Undergraduate Studies who either approves it and sends it to the Student Services Department or requests changes to be made.
  • The form does NOT need to be signed by the Lecturers of the corresponding courses offered at IES.
