Title: Caught in a Sovereign Debt Quagmire: A Quantitative Assessment
Authors: Tai-kuang Ho (National Taiwan University), Chia-Wei Cheny (National Taiwan University)
Abstract: This paper presents how Chinese loans have caused some developing countries to face a debt crisis. Compared to what is typical in the literature, we use a specified structural model and quantitative method to assess how Chinese loans increase the chance of these countries being unable to repay their debt. We examine two countries for our study that are discussed extensively in the media: Sri Lanka and Zambia. Our results show that Chinese loans account for Sri Lanka's and Zambia's debt distress. Moreover, private lenders have played an equally important role as the Chinese official lending.
The seminar will take place on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, in Room 314 at 12:30.
The paper is available here.
If you need a discussion slot with Prof. Ho, please write to Jaromír Baxa, and he will try to find a suitable time.
