Research seminar: Hwan-sik Choi (Binghamton University)

We would like to invite you to a research seminar by Hwan-sik Choi, Associate Professor of Economics at Binghamton University.

Title: Financial Literacy, Ability, and Stock Market Participation
Authors: Hwan-sik Choi (Binghamton University) and Ron A. Laschever (Compass Lexecon)

Abstract: We study the role of financial literacy and ability, both cognitive and noncognitive, in explaining stock market participation. We examine a comprehensive set of cognitive and noncognitive measures of ability and a detailed financial-literacy measure using data from the Health and Retirement Study. We find that both financial literacy and a wide range of ability measures have an effect on stock market participation. We decompose the effect of ability into direct and indirect effects that operate via financial literacy. In addition, we address potential endogeneity concerns by exploiting information on genetic variation across individuals.

The seminar will take place on Monday, June 3, in Room 105 at 11:00. The full paper is available here
If you need a discussion slot with Prof. Choi, please write to Jiří Kukačka, and he will try to find a suitable time.
